Karl Rove’s Secret Tucson Trip

Apparently, even local Republicans are afraid to admit that they are friends of the dark force behind Bush’s political ascendancy, Karl Rove. Rove came to town today to raise money for Senator Jon Kyl at a $500-a-plate lunch at the Tucson Country Club after a $2,000-per-person shindig at Jim Click’s house.

But instead of trumpeting this visit, local Republicans kept it secret. Media were not informed in advance, and one journalist who found out was kicked out of the Country Club grounds.

The Pima County Democratic Party did find out, and pulled together a press conference at the Country Club entrance where we council candidates talked about what Karl means to us, and why Rove’s values of manipulation, fear, division, and greed are not Tucson’s values. My talk is here. A good number of spirited activists joined us. The Democrats issued a press release to all media in town. Only one media member showed up to cover the event; apparently a secret visit by the most powerful man in the White House is not considered newsworthy.

We’ll find out later in the campaign what kind of dirty tricks local Karl-fans Fred & Kathleen have learned today from the master manipulator himself. Tucsonans deserve better than deception, scheming and divisiveness, and I will do my best to provide that better leadership from a place of faith and hope. That’s real values. Stay tuned…
