Which Democrat can beat Fred?

There’s been a lot of talk from my Democratic opponent that I’m a good progressive, but that she is somehow more likely to beat Fred Ronstadt in the general election. It’s time to confront that issue directly. Who really is more able to beat Fred in November?

Nina Trasoff says she is more electable because last year she “won all six wards” in the City of Tucson in her failed attempt to gain an Arizona Corporation Commission seat. But let’s consider the facts of that race.

She was the only candidate from Tucson. The other four candidates were from Phoenix. She was one of only two Democrats in a race in which voters were allowed to vote for two people. Tucson voters are overwhelmingly Democrats. In fact, it would have been virtually impossible for any Tucson Democrat NOT to win all six Tucson wards. Her job was to win the whole state, and she failed.

I have a track record of being directly and actively involved in city issues–from transportation to downtown revitalization, from youth programs to neighborhood empowerment, from historical preservation to development services–constantly for the past eight years. My vision of hope for our community has always been matched by the stomach for a tough fight.

My track record includes the election in which I defeated Fred Ronstadt’s reckless neighborhood-destroying road tax in May 2002–the one with the Grade Separated Interchange (GSI) at Grant & Campbell. My grassroots group of activists was outspent by Fred and his forces by more than 125 to 1, but we defeated his plan in every single precinct in the city. It is worth mentioning that Nina Trasoff supported Fred’s road tax at the time.

I am running for council because, as a councilmember, I can be more effective in fighting for Tucson’s future. That’s why Tucsonans from all different backgrounds throughout the city are walking and phoning three days a week to spread the word about the Farley candidacy. We can finally have a voice of the people on the City Council, and you can help us make it happen. Volunteer today!
